INDIA TRAVEL GUIDE
RAJASTHAN
Rajasthan is a land of grand cities, ancient ruins, opulent palace hotels, and
stylish boutique accommodations. While Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur draw plenty
of attention, there are lesser-known spots that offer a more intimate and
romantic glimpse of India. Explore off-the-beaten-path destinations like Bundi,
Chhatra Sagar, Ramathra Fort, Shahpura, and Bhainsrorgarh for a truly unique
experience.
MADHYA PRADESH
Often referred to as India’s heartland, Madhya Pradesh is home to some of the
country’s most iconic wildlife parks. Rudyard Kipling immortalized its forests,
which are now home to tigers, leopards, and a variety of other wildlife. Visit
Pench, Kanha, and Bandhavgarh for a chance to see these majestic creatures in
their natural habitat. Less traveled but equally stunning is Satpura National
Park, offering a quieter, more immersive experience.
DELHI
Delhi, a sprawling metropolis with over 25 million residents, is a captivating
blend of the old and new. The bustling streets of Old Delhi offer a chaotic
charm, while New Delhi’s expansive green spaces provide a welcome respite. From
medieval forts and colonial-era buildings to modern shopping malls and lively
bazaars, Delhi presents a fascinating juxtaposition of history and modernity.
UTTAR PRADESH
Uttar Pradesh may not always be at the top of most itineraries, but its depth
of culture and history make it a must-see. Beyond the iconic Taj Mahal, explore
the vibrant cities of Lucknow and Varanasi, or visit Dudhwa National Park for a
more offbeat wildlife experience.
UTTARAKHAND
Uttarakhand, once known mainly for its spiritual significance, is now emerging
as a destination for adventure and nature enthusiasts. While Rishikesh and
Haridwar still draw pilgrims, the state offers incredible trekking
opportunities in the Himalayas, encounters with diverse wildlife, and thrilling
white-water rafting.
HIMACHAL PRADESH
Himachal Pradesh, with its stunning mountain landscapes and charming hill
stations, is a haven for nature lovers and adventurers. Known for its trekking
routes, scenic valleys, and Tibetan heritage, it offers a peaceful escape into
the mountains, with destinations like Manali, Shimla, and Dharamshala standing
out as top spots for exploration.
KASHMIR
Kashmir, often referred to as "Paradise on Earth," is famed for its
breathtaking landscapes, serene lakes, and snow-capped mountains. Visitors can
explore the tranquil Dal Lake, wander through lush gardens, or trek through the
stunning valleys. The region’s unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural
heritage makes it a captivating destination.
LEH LADAKH
Leh Ladakh, located in the northernmost part of India, is an awe-inspiring
desert region surrounded by the towering Himalayas. Known for its barren
beauty, high-altitude trekking, and Buddhist monasteries, it’s a dream
destination for adventurers and spiritual seekers alike. The stark landscape
offers a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect from the hustle and
bustle of daily life.
WEST BENGAL
West Bengal is a region of fascinating contrasts, where diverse climates,
cultures, and traditions create a unique travel experience. The bustling
streets of Kolkata offer a blend of modernity and history, while Darjeeling’s
panoramic views of the Himalayas captivate visitors. For wildlife enthusiasts,
the Sundarbans National Park offers a chance to explore its dense mangroves,
although spotting the elusive Bengal tiger is rare.
NORTHEASTERN STATES (7 SISTERS)
The Northeast region of India, comprising the seven sister states, is a hidden
gem for those seeking unspoiled natural beauty and diverse cultures. From the
tea gardens of Assam to the lush hills of Meghalaya, the area is rich in ethnic
diversity and offers off-the-beaten-path experiences, including trekking,
wildlife safaris, and encounters with indigenous tribes.
ODISHA
Odisha, located along India’s eastern coast, is a treasure trove of cultural
heritage and natural beauty. Famous for its ancient temples like the Jagannath
Temple in Puri, the state also boasts pristine beaches, lush forests, and
wildlife sanctuaries like Simlipal. Odisha offers a blend of spiritual,
cultural, and natural experiences that make it an emerging travel destination.
KERALA
Kerala, with its verdant landscapes, tranquil backwaters, and palm-fringed
beaches, offers a peaceful and rejuvenating retreat. While the southern part of
Kerala is famous for its backwater cruises and spice plantations, the northern
region provides a more authentic Keralan experience, with quiet beaches,
family-run hotels, and a deep cultural heritage.
MUMBAI
As India’s largest and most cosmopolitan city, Mumbai is a fast-paced, thriving
metropolis full of energy and excitement. From the glitz of Bollywood to the
bustling street markets, Mumbai offers a dynamic mix of modernity and
tradition. With its rich architectural diversity, from colonial-era buildings
to contemporary skyscrapers, Mumbai is a fascinating city to explore.
KARNATAKA
Karnataka, with its diverse landscapes of jungles, rivers, beaches, and
historical sites, is one of India’s most vibrant and varied destinations.
Bangalore, the capital, is a tech hub known for its parks and lakes, while
rural Karnataka is home to ancient ruins, the coffee plantations of Coorg, and
the majestic palaces of Mysore. The state offers a perfect blend of modern life
and rich cultural heritage.
TAMIL NADU
Tamil Nadu is the heart of classical Indian culture, with an extraordinary
collection of temples, art, and music. Known for its ancient Dravidian
architecture, the state offers visitors a chance to explore some of the
country’s most distinctive temples. Tamil Nadu also boasts peaceful hill
stations, scenic beaches, and spiritual retreats, making it a welcoming
destination for travelers from all over the world.
WHAT TYPE OF INDIA HOLIDAY SUITS YOU?
FIRST-TIME VISITOR?
If you’re new to India and want to experience the country’s true essence,
consider our Journey through Madhya Pradesh itinerary. It starts with
Delhi and the Taj Mahal, then ventures off the beaten path to explore Gwalior
Fort, the temples at Khajuraho, the riverside temples of Orchha, and the
colonial charm of Bhopal.
A GENTLE, CULTURAL HOLIDAY WITH EXPLORATION AND
RELAXATION
Kerala is ideal for those seeking a blend of culture and tranquility. The
southern part of the state is well-known, but the northern areas offer a
quieter, more authentic Kerala experience. Here, you can cruise through
peaceful backwaters on a rice barge, unwind on secluded beaches, and visit
small, family-run hotels that offer a real sense of place. Explore local
markets, taste distinctive dishes, and meet the warm and welcoming Keralan
people for a truly idyllic experience.
LOOKING TO EXPLORE THE GREAT OUTDOORS?
If you're seeking full mountaineering adventures, we recommend consulting a
climbing specialist. For those who prefer a mix of trekking, relaxation, and
exploration, India offers countless options. The Himalayas and its foothills,
along with other mountain ranges, are ideal for treks of all levels.
Uttarakhand, for instance, is an adventure haven with breathtaking landscapes,
rich wildlife (like Jim Corbett National Park), and trekking and rafting
opportunities in the fresh air of the Himalayan foothills.
A UNIQUE WILDLIFE EXPERIENCE
For seasoned visitors or wildlife enthusiasts, consider exploring lesser-known
parks that have recently opened up to tourism. New lodges and hotels in remote
areas of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan offer an exclusive wildlife experience,
reminiscent of the earlier days before these parks were well-known, but with
modern comforts. Satpura National Park, with its three lodges, limited jeeps,
and walking and boat safaris, provides a rare, intimate experience. Similarly,
Jamtara Lodge in Pench is the only one in the area, offering exclusive safaris
and "star beds" for an unforgettable night under the sky. In
Rajasthan, Jawai, a remote area known for leopard sightings, offers a unique
opportunity for wildlife lovers, with new accommodations for an authentic
experience.
EXPLORING INDIA'S COLONIAL PAST
For those interested in the remnants of India’s colonial history, India offers
a fascinating journey into the British Raj. With growing interest in this
period, many visitors are revisiting family histories and exploring regions
like Darjeeling and Kolkata in West Bengal, both key to the British presence in
India. Delhi, the heart of the Raj, or Lucknow, site of a major event during
the Indian Mutiny, are also compelling destinations. For a more nostalgic
experience, consider visiting Shimla, the famous hill station in Himalayas.
ACCOMMODATIONS IN INDIA
In India, staying in a "heritage hotel" is like
stepping into history. These restored palaces, forts, and havelis, mainly found
in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, are often still managed by royal families who
offer a warm, personalized experience. While these historic properties may have
quirky layouts and informal service, their unique charm and intimate atmosphere
make them unforgettable. Small heritage hotels often include shared meals with
the family, providing a genuine cultural exchange, though some might prefer
more privacy.
Beyond heritage stays, India offers a wide variety of accommodations, from luxury resorts and jungle lodges to boutique city hotels. With new properties opening regularly, choosing the right one for your style is key. While we often recommend smaller, more intimate hotels for their local flavor, larger hotel chains can be a practical choice, especially in busy tourist spots. We believe in a balanced approach, offering both cultural authenticity and modern comfort for a truly memorable stay.
FOOD & DRINK IN INDIA
India’s culinary landscape is a rich tapestry woven with
diverse regional flavors, united by the creative use of spices. From the
south’s ancient vegetarian traditions, fiery seafood dishes, and bold chili
flavors to the hearty, meat-based Mughal cuisine and Punjabi tandoor
delicacies, there’s something for every palate. Bengal’s famous fish curries
and the Euro-Indian fusion dishes influenced by colonial heritage add further
depth to the gastronomic experience.
In the southern regions, rice is the staple, while the north
leans on an array of breads like chapatti, poori, paratha, and naan. Across
India, lentils, known as dahl, are cherished, with variations ranging from the
thin, tangy sambhar of the south to the rich, thick moong dahls of the north.
Beef is largely absent from menus due to religious customs, but chicken, lamb,
and goat (commonly referred to as mutton) are popular proteins.
Vegetables, often the stars of Indian cuisine, are prepared
either dry or in spiced gravies, with yogurt frequently served to cool the heat
and aid digestion. Coastal states like Kerala, Goa, and Odisha are celebrated
for their fiery seafood specialties, especially fish dishes.
For beverages, imported wines and internationally recognized
spirits are available in luxury hotels, though prices often carry heavy duties,
markups, and taxes, sometimes reaching 400%. It’s wise to check prices before
ordering. Among local options, Indian wines such as Sula and Grover (available
in both red and white) are highly regarded, while locally brewed beer, gin,
vodka, and dark rum are favorites among visitors. However, in remote areas,
finding tonic or soda can be challenging.
Dry Days and Alcohol Restrictions
The government designates three national holidays as "dry days,"
during which hotels and restaurants are prohibited from serving alcohol:
January 26 (Republic Day), August 15 (Independence Day), and October 2 (Gandhi
Jayanti). Additionally, smaller hotels or homestays may lack licenses to sell
alcohol, so travelers may wish to bring their own supplies. Some regions, such
as Gujarat and parts of Uttar Pradesh, are officially dry, though alcohol may
sometimes be discreetly available.
Unique Dining Experiences Near Wildlife Reserves
For those venturing into India’s wilderness, dining takes on a unique charm. In
Pench National Park, the exclusive Jamtara Lodge offers guests the chance to
sleep under the stars with their "star beds" experience. Meanwhile,
Jawai in Rajasthan, though not a formal national park, provides exceptional
leopard sightings and a growing selection of boutique accommodations, making it
a must-visit for nature enthusiasts seeking both wildlife and culinary
delights.
WEATHER AND BEST TIMES TO VISIT INDIA
October – March
This period is considered the prime travel season in India, making it the
perfect time to explore Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, and other iconic
destinations south of the Himalayas. The weather during these months is
typically dry and pleasantly warm, although variations exist due to the vast
geographical diversity of the country. For a tailored travel plan and deeper
insights, consult a travel expert.
April – June
While Kerala remains a good option in April, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh
experience rising temperatures and intense humidity during this time.
Uttarakhand, however, becomes a delightful retreat, especially for families
seeking an Easter holiday destination. Additionally, the warmer mountain
weather brings West Bengal to life with vibrant blooms, making it an ideal spot
for nature lovers.
June – July
These months mark the off-season for most of India, characterized by a mix of
heat, humidity, and monsoon rains. However, if you enjoy solitude and fewer
tourists, this might appeal to you. July also offers a unique spectacle—the
blooming of the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand, a sight worth braving the
weather for.
August – September
Rajasthan shines in its post-monsoon glory, with mid-August to September being
an exceptional time to visit for its lush beauty. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand and
other Himalayan regions open up for trekking enthusiasts, with the season
commencing in mid-September and extending into October.
General Advice for First-Time Visitors
India’s cities are alive with energy—a kaleidoscope of
colors, sounds, and movement that can feel overwhelming at first. However, this
vibrancy is also part of what makes the country so extraordinary. At India
Awaits, we design our itineraries to balance exploration with comfort, ensuring
your journey is both enriching and enjoyable.
Spending time in rural areas often provides a welcome
respite from the intensity of urban life. Our skilled guides are invaluable in
helping you understand and appreciate the cultural nuances of Indian life,
turning what might seem chaotic into a meaningful narrative.
To truly savor India, avoid cramming too much into your
schedule. Leave room for unexpected encounters, leisurely moments, and the
simple pleasure of soaking in your surroundings. Our itineraries are carefully
crafted to strike this balance, allowing for both discovery and relaxation.
As with any travel destination, patience and positivity go a
long way. A warm smile can defuse tensions far more effectively than a sharp
word, and being open to the unexpected often leads to the most memorable
experiences. Flexibility is the key to a smooth journey.
While India’s iconic landmarks are must-sees, we encourage
venturing beyond the well-trodden paths. Lesser-known sites often offer equally
stunning beauty and a sense of timeless tranquility. We’re here to help you
find that perfect mix of famous highlights and hidden gems.
After a busy day of exploring, returning to a welcoming
hotel can make all the difference—and India offers plenty of exceptional
accommodations to choose from.
It’s impossible to ignore that poverty is a reality in
India, but it is only part of the story. Rural communities, though less wealthy
by Western standards, are often rich in culture, tradition, and hospitality.
These experiences can provide a deeper connection to the country and its
people.
For those who wish to engage positively, we recommend activities such as our Delhi tour, led by former street children, which offers an eye-opening perspective and directly supports their empowerment. If you’re interested in contributing, we can guide you toward trusted organizations and charitable initiatives that make a real impact.
Can I Drink the Water in India?
Drinking tap water in India is generally not advisable.
However, you will find plenty of beverages to enjoy during your trip. Locally
brewed Indian beer, gin, and rum are widely available, and imported wines and
spirits can also be found, albeit at higher prices. If you're visiting southern
India, keep in mind that some states, like Kerala, have alcohol restrictions.
Here, beer and wine are commonly available, but spirits may not be sold in
certain establishments, so plan accordingly.
How Convenient Is Transportation in Indian Cities?
Navigating Indian cities may seem daunting initially, but
it's simpler than you might expect. With our tours, you’ll have the convenience
of a personal driver, available to assist you throughout your journey. Your
driver will take you to your destinations, wait while you explore or dine, and
ensure seamless travel—a practice that’s commonplace and efficient in India.
If you prefer local transport, taxis are widely available in
major cities and come in various forms. While some taxis use meters, drivers
often negotiate fares directly. It’s customary to agree on a price before
starting your journey, so don’t hesitate to engage in a bit of bartering to
secure a fair rate.
Will Poverty in India Diminish My Holiday Experience?
India’s socio-economic landscape is complex and often
misunderstood. While some areas experience poverty, it’s important to note that
this doesn’t define the entire country. Many urban slums showcase organized,
resourceful communities, while rural villages—though not wealthy in material
terms—are rich in culture, pride, and hospitality.
In fact, rural India is home to some of the warmest and most welcoming people you’ll encounter. Their spotless homes and vibrant traditions leave a lasting impression on visitors. By traveling responsibly and engaging with local communities, you can gain a deeper appreciation of India’s diversity while contributing to sustainable tourism efforts. Every interaction has the potential to create meaningful connections and unforgettable memories.
